Sc. 7 – The Los Angeles in My Mind

LISTEN: The Los Angeles In My Mind

1973, Susan returns to Los Angeles.

SUSAN:
We never had all this traffic before

Is Pasadena only
“Six glass smooth” miles from downtown?
It feels light-years away
Away
Away
Away
Away for three decades.

Escaped to New York, then to Paris,
Never planned to return.

I lived my dream, among
Subways and skyscrapers,
Smart cafés and galleries,
Away, Away
Yet the landscape of childhood—
Was what I painted.
The Los Angeles in my mind.

LEW:
Have you ever seen a
Driver out of the corner of your eye
And thought: I know her?

SUSAN:
The Los Angeles in my mind.

LEW:
But Susan left L.A.
Interned in a camp.
Away,
Away,
Away, light years away.

SUSAN:
Now, a show at The Pasadena Museum
My retrospective
Pasadena,
Where my father
Cruel, misplaced, displaced,
Gardened
Painted with flowers
Now, my retrospective.
The Los Angeles in my mind.

LEW:
Did you see the landing, Susan?
Alan Shepard played golf on the moon.

SUSAN:
The Los Angeles in my mind.

LEW:
He saw the earthrise
From our porch on the moon

SUSAN :
My retrospective…
On the other side of the planet,
I drew the neighborhood

LEW:
I heard you were in New York

SUSAN:
I couldn’t wait to leave

LEW:
Married to your art

SUSAN:
I painted the parkway that coiled through my heart

LEW:
I was married to my rockets

BOTH (but not together):
The Los Angeles in my mind
We thought it was the beginning of everything.
